Welcome
The
approaching fall season is always a busy and exciting time for us. Our
commmittee members return rested from the Summer break with renewed
energy and interest in taking up the projects that have been making
progress over the summer and in creating new initiatives for HPMS. We
almost share a "Back to School" sense of new beginnings and
building towards the future that we find in students returning to school.
In fact, HPMS and our Business Members just had a firsthand experience
with our youngest residents and their parents of the excitement and hopes
for the future that we all share through the Countdown to Kindergarten
Parade in Hyde Park.

Main Street Improvements Come
At Right Time
|
|

Hyde Park Avenue buildings
slated for major storefront improvements with both property owner and
tenants.
Developing a project with a property
owner or a small business tenant can take time. Often it is a natural
part of the overall design process, other times and most homeowners can
relate to this, you might have to wait for a contractor etc. We
typically spend weeks or months working with a grant applicant before
anyone really sees the tangible result, with permits pulled and
construction commenced. After 10 years of working on multiple
Storefront Improvement projects here in Hyde Park, we know it is worth
the wait. Our reward has been to leverage over $400,000 of private
investment in the Square directly through our Program.
Now we are partnering again with
Myer Dana and Sons Real Estate (HPMS Business Member) to renovate a
highly visible string of storefronts on Hyde Park Avenue across from
the Post Office. The timing is good. Our pre-approved project brings
building wide improvements to the area adjacent to the site of the
recent fire at Papa Gino’s. Our work is going forward now and
re-construction of the fire damaged storefronts will also commence once
the insurance is settled. The end result will be a new and updated look
for businesses from Hyde Park Avenue stretching around the corner up
River Street.

Hyde Park Businesses Join the
Parade for Countdown To Kindergarten
|
|
On September
7th a parade of excited, new kindergarteners dressed in matching yellow
shirts made the rounds of the Hyde Park business district. The parade
started at the Hyde Park Library with special guest Mayor Thomas M.
Menino who gave the children a talk on safety. The Mayor with Acting
Commissioner Tom Tinlin of the Boston Transportation Dept. announced
the "Back to School - Drive Carefully" Campaign with AAA to
promote driving safety - bumper stickers that help alert drivers that
kids are back in school. Art Kinman of the AAA spoke and distributed
the bumper stickers which will also be placed on all city vehichles.
The kids were each given bags to collect back-to-school themed items
donated by local businesses. Children accompanied by their parents were
served juice, coffee and donuts before heading out to visit the
participating businesses. Our grand marshal for the walk through the
district was City Councilor Rob Consalvo.
Over 30 businesses actively
participated together
with the U. S. Post Office and a representative from U.S. Congressman
Capuano’s Office. We were also pleased to have the active support of
the E-18 Police Station who helped the children safely cross the street
and gave out honorary badges for the day and the local Fire Station who
provided mini-firefighter hats for the kids to wear.
The parade ended at the Hyde Park
Community Center (Municipal Bldg.) where everyone enjoyed pizza and
cake plus face painting and craft making. Each parent also received an
informational folder with family orientated materials about activities,
sports and businesses in the area that offer a wide array of services
and products to meet their needs. HPMS donated a free Resident
Membership in Main Streets to every family at the Parade.
The “Countdown to Kindergarten”
program is partnered with Main Street districts across the city to hold
parades and help make the start of school exciting and fun for these
newest students in the Boston Public School system. Hyde Park
Main Streets would like to thank the business community for their
tremendous response and warm welcome to some of our youngest residents.
