WiFi On Main Streets In Hyde Park

Boston Main Streets WiFi: A public private partnership to bringing free wireless internet access to Main Street Communities Click picture for more information.

What exactly is WiFi? Hyde Park Main Streets is pleased to be one of three trial neighborhoods to launch WiFi (Wireless Internet Access) through an Initiative with Boston Main Streets to continue our efforts to bring technology to the business district. Several members of the Hyde Park business community came to our monthly Networking Breakfast this past week to find out more about it. Brian Goodman from BMS was on hand to explain and answer questions.

We have already sited the first antenna on the roof of the Hyde Park Community Center. When we approached Robert Hickey of the Community Center. he was immediately receptive and agreed to the installation. Now we are in the midst of testing the signal which reaches to the Prudential Bldg. downtown. Imagine customers with lap tops drinking a cup of coffee and checking their e-mails at Dottie’s, or college students doing research online while having a slice at the River Street Grille. Brian gave us a vision of not only having individual businesses set up as "hotspots" but having Hyde Park being known as a "wireless or WiFi community".

In an effort to assist local businesses interested in the WiFi Network, Boston Main Streets has made available a WiFi Business Package that includes:

  • Discounted Hardware (Optional)
  • Installation (Optional)
  • FREE installation available for a limited number of businesses.
  • Promotion (Available to any Business accessing the Main Streets WiFi Hotspot)
  • Listing as a WiFi Hotspot on the Main Streets WiFi Directory
  • A "Boston Main Streets WiFi Hotspot" window decal.

Making the district more attractive to customers and providing the technology to small businesses to capture new markets, this is Hyde Park Main Streets leading the way to benefit our “small town in the city.”

Hurricane Katrina Holiday Donation Fund

Hyde Park Main Streets is planning a donation can drive to collect funds for Hurricane Katrina Relief. All Hyde Park Businesses are asked to contact us at the HPMS office ASAP if you would like to display a can as part of our local relief efforts. Everyone has been touched by this tragedy and there are many great ways to assist, this will be another way for the Hyde Park community, both residents and businesses to come together and make a contribution to the relief efforts.

The cans will be collected on December 19th in time for a holiday donation. The Hyde Park Cooperative Bank has offered to convert the money raised into a donation check. BMS Paper Co. has donated 50 collection cans to HPMS for display in local businesses. The Hyde Park Bulletin has offered to publish without charge a listing of all participating businesses. All proceeds will be split between The American Red Cross and The Salvation Army.

Help Your Neighbors Stay Connected

Paul's Bridge in Hyde Park

Most of you receive only an e-mail version of our monthly newsletter, however, you may not realize that we send out hundreds of letters to our Hyde Park neighbors who do not have Internet access. For a long time, one volunteer, Pat Adamczyk provided a great service to Hyde Park Main Streets by folding & stuffing our monthly newsletter for us. With on average over 500 envelopes to be stuffed, this task is a great example of how truly volunteer driven our organization is and how we depend on volunteers for important contributions of their time.

Since Pat has taken a well earned retirement from this task, we have been looking to find someone or a group interested in helping HPMS send out our newsletter in a timely fashion. We need you! This is volunteer contribution that can be done at home, literally delivered to your doorstep, but one that represents an active and invaluable contribution to our Program.

There are also other opportunities to contribute. For example, anyone who enjoys working with designing albums/editing photographs for posting to our web site. Please let us know if you are interested in helping with the mailing or if you have some other special skills you could bring to your community.
