Hyde
Park Businesses Raise Money for Hurricane Katrina Relief

Hyde Park Main Streets sponsored a
holiday donation can drive to collect funds for families in need resulting
from Hurricane Katrina. About 25 businesses participated and $386 were
raised! The proceeds were split between The American Red Cross and The
Salvation Army. It was a great way both residents and businesses could come
together and make a contribution to the relief efforts.
We want to thank those who helped us
with the fund drive: BMS Paper Co. donated 50 collection cans for
display in local businesses, the Hyde Park Bulletin published without
charge a listing of all participating businesses, Essence of Thyme opened
the cans for us, and the Hyde Park Cooperative Bank converted the money
raised into donation checks.

Welcome,
We
are off to great start for the New Year with multiple Storefront
Improvement grant projects in the pipeline across the district. Our
successful history of leveraging private investment into the physical
structure of the Square, by both renovating the buildings and improving
the streetscape is paying off in a major way. Hyde Park Main Streets has
helped set the table and now we are seeing the results with 3 moderate to
upscale restaurants all planning on locating in Hyde Park this year.
We
are actively working with all 3 businesses to achieve this goal, one of
our top priorities, bringing a new restaurant scene to Hyde Park. We will
keep you posted on the progress of this and our other projects each month
in the newsletter.

New Businesses and More
Storefront Improvements Coming in 2006
|

Papa
Ginos will re-open! Local artist, Jen Venora, painted colorful scenes
on the burned out facade. Click picture to visit our
website and see the list of current projects.
Many
of you may have noticed the recent spike in vacancies in the district,
this is always a concern, but for us we try to look at it as an
opportunity to attract a more diverse retail mix. One new business
we are working with is Blue Waves Fish Market soon to be opening on
River Street in Cleary Square. I had a great initial meeting with
one of the owners and was very impressed with their business plan. The
market will feature a wide variety of fresh fish plus some prepared
seafood and take-out. The atmosphere at Blue Waves will be warm and
welcoming with free recipe cards and tips on fish preparation as part
of the whole experience. Our market research conducted by the MIT study
shows that this type of specialty food store can succeed in Hyde Park,
I am looking forward to picking up some fresh fish on my way home and
maybe learning a new recipe or two. Hyde Park Main Streets has already
accepted Blues Waves application for a Storefront Improvement grant and
developing a creative window display for the new business.
We
now have over 15 Storefront Improvement projects currently underway,
this Spring promises to be one of major renovations and construction
throughout the district, all spurred by our Program and made
possible by business and property owners willing to invest with us in
Hyde Park, our Small Town In the City.

A Great Night Out At The
Super Bowl Raffle Drawing
|
|

Meet
Me In Motown! Super Bowl XL is set: The Seahawks
will meet the Steelers on Feb. 5. (Click photo for more info.)
At
the Drawing, hosted by Cappy’s Tavern in Wolcott Square, the room was
packed with hopeful ticket purchasers, including one local attorney,
John Pulgini, who much to his surprise held the winning number! In
a great twist of fate, John had purchased 5 tickets to the raffle and
gave away the other 4; the one he kept was the winner, lucky
number 205.
The
second prize, a 23” LCD flat screen Sony TV with 3 months Free Digital
Gold Cable service generously donated by Comcast set the stage for more
excitement as ticket holders were really pleased to also have a chance
of winning this popular item. More charitable giving for the community
resulted when the second place winner, number 103, graciously
donated his prize to the Hyde Park Cooperative Bank Charitable
Foundation.
Third
prize, the Patriot’s Super Bowl victory poster was won by
J.D. Thompson of Campanelli Companies with number 91, who was also a
corporate supporter of this unique and very successful fundraiser
for HPMS.
