"I was a new home owner in Hyde Park when I encountered
Hyde Park Main Streets. Volunteering provided a great opportunity for me to
learn about the community that I was laying down roots in. My service on
the Promotions Committee allowed me to make meaningful contributions. For
example, my whole family has participated in our semi-annual clean up
projects and it helps us to feel like we are providing positive
contributions to our town."

Welcome
Happy
Spring! As the weather gradually improves we are looking forward to many
more outdoor projects from the annual Boston Shines Clean-up to our own
Urban Landscaping project with the YMCA and EarthWorks. We've happy to
hear members are pleased with our new format and plan on including more
visuals here and on the web. Recently I met with local photographer,
Raymond Chisholm, who has generously offered to help Main Streets develop
a photographic album of Hyde Park for posting on our new web site. His
most recent project was the Hyde Park Food Pantry calendar featuring
major buildings and sites across town. Mr. Chisholm's contribution will
be invaluable to us in promoting and sharing our Small Town In The City
to a wider audience.

Urban Landscaping Project
This Summer

Future
site of urban landscaping project - current conditons
Hyde
Park Main Streets, the Hyde Park YMCA and EarthWorks will be partnering
together this summer with a team of 10 teenagers to design and
implement an urban landscaping project adjoining the Fairmount MBTA
Station. The selected site is the weed filled slope abutting the
bridge that leads directly into the business district from the commuter
rail station and is highly visible to both cars and pedestrians.
Identified as an important "Gateway" area into the business
district by the APA (American Planning Association) award winning MIT
study "Hyde Park Main Streets: The Small Town in The City,
Strategies and Recommendations for a Revitalized Business
District" this project will further our strategic goal of
improving this key location.
Last
summer we had a great experience working with the YMCA and its teens
under the leadership of Helen Christou to create the mural directly
under the bridge, who with local artist Jen Vanora transformed a dark
and neglected wall of concrete into a vibrant image of Hyde Park. Our
Business Members also played a great supporting role in that effort,
from Melinda's Taqueria that donated lunch for the kids one day to Auto
Electric Supply that provided key water access & storage. This
year HPMS and the YMCA are excited to return to this Gateway with a new
team and partner, EarthWorks. It will be a pilot program for
EarthWorks in "engaging youth in an educational series with
the goal of restoring urban greenspace. Youth who participate will
learn horticultural skills and be empowered through engaging in a
meaningful and lasting improvement to their neighborhood."

Boston Shines 2005 - May 6
& 7th Citywide Neighborhood Clean-Up
|
|

Get
ready to spruce up for Spring.
Spring
is here, we hope! And it will soon be time for our annual Clean-up of
the Business District. HPMS always has a great team of volunteers and
we are already making plans to add a special beautification touch to
the day. The Design Committee is doing an inventory of the whiskey
barrels for winter damage so we can get ready for spring flower
planting on Saturday, May 7th. If you are interested in volunteering
please call the Main Streets office at 361-6964. We are looking for
donations of mulch and gravel for the flower barrels etc. and also
white vinegar to pour into cracks to deter weed growth on the
sidewalks. Businesses should make a special effort to sweep the
sidewalks on Friday, there is a lot of sand and debris from the winter
and the street cleaners will be out in force on Saturday to clean the
streets.
